When Words Are Not Enough
When Words Are Not Enough is a project that aims to enhance the great work that is already being done by shelters in the GTA by adding a body-focused component to the healing services offered. This project recognises that traumatic experiences remain embedded in our bodies, held in memory as sensations and images and that complete, holistic healing must include the body as well as the mind.
By using body-based
practices, such as movement, relaxation techniques, and dance, When Words Are Not
Enough will provide vital tools for women to reconnect with their bodies. Such
work helps to rehabilitate the body by using the language of the body, moving
beneath words which often block
access to conscious awareness. The project will give women an artistic,
creative, playful space, creating a distance from intense feelings so they can
have a safe way to work with them. Movement-based practices also increase
access to healing by moving beyond language barriers. In the GTA, where a large
proportion of women who experience violence have little to no English skills,
this means many more women can participate and benefit from the project. The
gentle movement practices encourage women to listen to their own bodies within
their own comfort level and physical ability, meaning the practice is open to
women of all ages and abilities.
Creating a safe space for movement activities, the women who participate will learn relaxation, grounding and emotional processing skills, accept and trust their bodies, increase their self-esteem, increase their trust of others and their ability to form healthy relationships, get physical exercise, deepen their sense of community, and become further empowered to care for and make the best choices for themselves.
